Your Google Business Profile Website Button Opens the Wrong URL—How to Fix It

A customer searches for your company, finds the correct Google Business Profile, taps Website—and lands on an old domain, the wrong branch, a booking marketplace or a page that no longer exists. The listing itself can look perfectly healthy, so this failure is easy to miss. It also happens at the worst moment: after a prospect has already chosen your business.

In audits, I treat this as a routing problem rather than a ranking problem. First identify which link is wrong. Then follow every redirect and provider handoff until the final destination is visible. Only after that should you edit the profile.

First, identify the link that is actually failing

A Business Profile can expose more than one outbound link. The main Website button is different from appointment, booking, menu, food-ordering and other local business links. Google also allows some link types to have a preferred destination. Editing the homepage field will not repair a provider-controlled booking link, and replacing a booking link will not change the primary Website button.

Test the profile in Google Search and Google Maps on both mobile and desktop. Use a private browser window as well, because an owner view can differ from what customers see. Record the exact link label, the URL shown before the click, and the final address after the page finishes loading.

If the failure occurs only on the Website button, start with the primary website field. If it occurs on Book, Order, Menu or Appointments, review the relevant local business link and any third-party provider attached to it. Google's Business Profile editing guide and local business links documentation explain where those fields are managed.

Run a controlled five-minute diagnosis

  1. Copy the destination instead of relying only on what the button label suggests.

  2. Open it in a private window on Wi-Fi and mobile data.

  3. Note every hostname and path in the redirect chain.

  4. Test the homepage and the intended location or service page directly.

  5. Repeat the test from another device before changing the profile.

This separates a stale Google field from a website-side redirect. If the copied Business Profile URL is already wrong, edit the profile. If the copied URL is correct but the browser ends somewhere else, the fault is normally in the domain, CDN, application or provider configuration.

Check whether Google or another manager changed the profile

Open the profile while signed in to the account that manages it, choose Edit profile, and inspect the Website field character by character. Watch for an old domain, a missing path, an obsolete Wix free URL, a staging hostname, an http address, or the wrong location page.

Also review recent profile notifications and confirm who has owner or manager access. Google may surface updates based on information it finds elsewhere, while another authorized manager may have edited the field. Do not repeatedly toggle the URL while an edit is being reviewed; document the current value, make one accurate correction and allow the review to complete.

Trace redirects before you blame the listing

A correct-looking profile URL can still reach the wrong destination through one or more redirects. Common examples include an expired campaign page redirecting to the homepage, an old domain pointing to a parked page, or a location path being forced to a different branch.

Use your browser's Network panel or a redirect-checking tool and capture each response in order. Permanent site moves should use server-side permanent redirects to the closest equivalent new URL, not a chain through several unrelated pages. Google's redirect guidance recommends permanent redirects when a destination has moved for good.

  • Old domain → current domain: verify ownership, DNS and a direct permanent redirect.

  • http → https or www → non-www: make the hop consistent and avoid circular rules.

  • Old location page → new location page: preserve the closest matching intent.

  • Tracking link → landing page: ensure parameters do not trigger a broken rewrite.

  • Shortener or provider URL → business site: replace opaque intermediaries when you control the link.

If the website recently changed domains or platforms, follow a complete migration process rather than fixing only the Business Profile. Our guide to recovering rankings after a redesign covers redirects, internal links and post-launch checks. Google's site-move guidance is the authoritative reference for moving URLs.

Make sure the profile points to the right page

The correct destination is not always the homepage. A multi-location company should normally send each profile to the matching location page, where the address, phone number, hours and services agree with that profile. A service-area business without a customer-facing location may use a relevant service page if it clearly represents the business.

Avoid sending every branch to a generic locator that requires another search. Also avoid thin doorway pages created only to swap a city name. The landing page should help the visitor confirm they found the right business and take the next useful action.

If Google has indexed a development or preview domain, fix that separately. The recovery steps in our staging-site indexing guide prevent the temporary host from competing with the live domain. If alternate URL versions are confusing search engines, review our canonical troubleshooting guide.

Check platform settings

Wix

In Wix, confirm that the intended custom domain is connected and set as the primary domain. Check that the site is published, the destination page is not hidden behind a members-only rule, and any old free Wix URL or secondary domain redirects to the correct live address. Test the published URL, not the editor preview.

WordPress

Verify the WordPress Address and Site Address, then inspect redirect plugins, SEO plugins, the hosting control panel and CDN rules. A migration plugin may still force an old hostname or path. Clear caches only after correcting the rule, and test while logged out so admin cookies do not hide the failure.

Shopify

Confirm the primary domain in Shopify and test the relevant market or locale. If the bad button is Order or Shop rather than Website, inspect the ordering provider and its merchant settings. The storefront domain can be correct while a provider-controlled action link still points elsewhere.

Fix booking, ordering and menu links separately

Third-party action links deserve their own audit. Google may show links supplied by the business or by eligible providers. A provider can therefore reappear even after the homepage field is corrected. Follow Google's business-link policies, remove or update links you control, and contact the provider when it owns the incorrect destination.

For a booking link, complete a real test through service selection, time slot, customer details, payment if applicable, and confirmation. Our booking-flow diagnostic helps isolate failures after the click.

Add tracking without breaking the URL

UTM parameters can show how many visits and conversions came from the profile, but add them to a stable canonical destination. Keep the base URL correct, use consistent source and medium values, and confirm that your redirect rules preserve the query string. A campaign parameter should never decide which branch or domain the visitor sees.

After publishing the corrected link, click it from the public profile and verify the visit in analytics. Then test the important action—call, form, booking, directions or purchase—rather than treating a pageview as proof that the route works.

What not to do

  • Do not create a replacement Business Profile to solve a bad link; that can introduce duplicates and split reviews.

  • Do not use a URL shortener that hides the final destination.

  • Do not point every location at the same unrelated homepage when a useful location page exists.

  • Do not keep editing the link every few hours while Google is reviewing it.

  • Do not stop after the browser reaches a page; verify the page represents the correct business and the main conversion works.

Final verification checklist

  • The public Website button opens the intended HTTPS URL.

  • Mobile, desktop and private-window tests reach the same business.

  • The redirect chain is short, deliberate and free of loops.

  • The page matches the profile's location, phone, hours and services.

  • Booking, menu and order links were tested independently.

  • Analytics records the visit without changing the destination.

  • Old domains and staging URLs no longer compete with the live site.

Fix the route, then measure the result

A wrong Business Profile link is rarely solved by changing random SEO settings. Determine which button is failing, compare the stored URL with the final browser destination, repair the responsible layer, and validate the customer's complete journey. That sequence produces a durable fix and avoids unnecessary profile edits.

If the link path crosses several domains, providers or redirect rules, Webcurry can perform a focused website and local-search review and document exactly where the route breaks.
