Google Shows the Wrong Business Hours—How to Fix Your Business Profile

A customer checks your business on Google, sees “Closed,” and chooses a competitor—even though your doors are open. Or Google says you are open late, a customer arrives, and finds the lights off. Incorrect hours look like a small profile error, but they can create missed calls, wasted journeys, poor reviews and lost trust.

The tempting fix is to type the same hours into the profile again. That works only when the stored main hours are the actual problem. In practice, the wrong display may come from special hours, service-specific hours, a temporary-closure status, a duplicate location, a public edit or conflicting information on your website. The reliable approach is to identify which hours Google is showing and why.

First, capture the exact problem customers see

Test the public profile before opening the owner controls. Search the business name in Google Search and Maps while signed out, then repeat on a phone. Record the date, local time, displayed open or closed status, weekly schedule and any holiday notice.

Do not test only the expandable hours table. Google may show a live status such as “Open,” “Closed” or “Closing soon” based on the current day, the location's time zone and an applicable special schedule. If the weekly table is correct but the live status is wrong, the conflict may be date-specific rather than a permanent main-hours error.

  1. Confirm that the result is the correct location and not a similarly named or duplicate profile.

  2. Check whether the error affects one date, one service, one department or the entire weekly schedule.

  3. Compare Search, Maps and the owner view.

  4. Take screenshots before editing so you can prove what changed.

  5. Test again from a private browser window to reduce account-specific differences.

Understand the four different hour states

Google Business Profile does not treat every schedule as one field. Before editing, decide which of these states describes the business.

1. Main hours

Main hours are the normal weekly schedule. They should represent when customers can interact with the business in the way its category implies. Google's business representation guidelines give category-specific examples: restaurants generally use dine-in hours, storage facilities use office hours, and car dealerships use sales hours.

2. Special hours

Special hours override the normal schedule for a specific date, such as a holiday, private event or temporary change. Google says they are appropriate when hours change temporarily or the business stays closed for six consecutive days or fewer. A forgotten special-hours entry can make the public profile disagree with the regular schedule.

3. More hours

“More hours” describe a particular service, such as drive-through, pickup, delivery or senior hours. Google advises that these service hours should generally sit within the primary hours. They do not replace the main schedule, so editing them cannot repair an incorrect primary open or closed status.

4. Temporarily closed

A closure longer than seven days, an off-season closure or an indefinite pause belongs under Temporarily closed rather than a long run of special-hour entries. Google's closure guidance distinguishes this from short closures. When the business reopens, restore its main hours so the profile no longer carries the temporary status.

Correct the appropriate field once

Open the verified profile, choose Edit profile, then Hours. Review the main hours one day at a time, including split schedules. Google supports multiple opening periods on the same day, which is useful for businesses that close between lunch and dinner or pause appointments mid-day.

Next inspect Special hours for upcoming and recently passed dates. A date-specific entry overrides the ordinary weekly pattern, so do not assume the main schedule will win. Google's current hours instructions and special-hours instructions document the separate controls.

Make one accurate update, save it, and note the time. Repeatedly changing the hours while an edit is under review makes diagnosis harder and can produce conflicting evidence.

Check Google updates and manager activity

Google can apply updates from user suggestions and other publicly available information. If an update requires review, Google may notify profile managers. Its guidance says that an unreviewed suggestion can be published after four days when supported by other public sources.

Review profile notifications, recent emails and every account with owner or manager access. If the hours keep reverting, do not keep fighting the visible field. Find the source that keeps supporting the incorrect schedule.

  • An old contact or locations page on the website.

  • A footer that shows a different schedule from the location page.

  • A booking widget whose availability is mistaken for opening hours.

  • A social profile or directory that still carries the previous schedule.

  • A second Business Profile for the same location.

  • A manager, franchise team or agency editing a separate source.

Google's Business Profile updates documentation explains how suggested changes can appear. Accept only accurate updates; correct the underlying public sources when Google repeatedly proposes the same wrong value.

Make the website support the correct schedule

The website cannot directly overwrite a Business Profile, but it is an important corroborating source. Put a clear, human-readable schedule on the relevant location page. Include the business name, address, phone number and time zone where ambiguity is possible.

For a multi-location business, do not show one global schedule without explaining differences. Each profile should link to the matching location page, and that page should display the hours for that location. If the wrong page is attached to the profile, use our Google Business Profile website-link diagnostic to trace and correct it.

LocalBusiness structured data can describe opening hours to search engines, but it should mirror visible page content. Do not hide a second schedule in markup, and do not expect schema alone to edit the Business Profile. The customer-visible page, structured data and profile should tell the same story.

Platform-specific consistency checks

Wix

Check the published location page, site footer, contact page, booking service availability and any manually entered Local Business markup. Remember that booking availability is not automatically the same as walk-in hours. Publish the site after correcting text or structured data, then test the live domain rather than the editor preview.

WordPress

Search the theme customizer, reusable blocks, footer widgets, location plugins, schema plugins and caching layers. A correct location page can coexist with an obsolete footer or JSON-LD block. Clear page and CDN caches after the source is corrected, then inspect the public HTML while logged out.

Shopify

Review the store-locator app, location pages, footer, pickup settings and theme structured data. Pickup availability and customer-service hours may differ from storefront opening hours; label them explicitly instead of presenting each as the universal schedule.

Diagnose duplicate and multi-location profiles

If Search and Maps show different hours, verify that both results share the same address, phone number, reviews and profile identity. Duplicate profiles can split edits: you correct one while customers continue finding the other.

For businesses with departments, Google recommends separate profiles only for qualifying public-facing departments, with the main business hours on the main profile and the department's hours on its own profile. Do not force all departments into one schedule when customers can visit them separately.

The broader relationship between Maps visibility and the connected website is covered in our guide to why a local business can appear on Maps while its website does not rank.

Watch for time-zone and overnight-hour mistakes

An overnight business may open on one calendar day and close on the next. A schedule that looks visually reasonable in an admin screen can produce the wrong live status if the day boundary is entered incorrectly. Test just before midnight, just after midnight and around the closing time.

Also separate customer-facing business hours from booking confirmation times. If appointments themselves shift by an hour or appear in the wrong zone, follow our booking time-zone diagnostic rather than changing the public opening hours to compensate.

Use a controlled verification checklist

  • The public result is the correct profile and location.

  • Main hours match the normal customer-facing schedule.

  • Split-day and overnight periods behave correctly.

  • Special hours cover holidays and short exceptions.

  • More hours are labelled for the right service.

  • Temporary closure is used only for an appropriate longer closure.

  • Website text, footer, schema and directories agree.

  • No duplicate profile is exposing an older schedule.

  • Search, Maps, mobile and private-window tests agree after the update.

What not to do

  • Do not create a new profile just because the current hours are wrong.

  • Do not mark a business permanently closed to solve a temporary schedule problem.

  • Do not enter seven separate special dates when the business is closed for a longer period.

  • Do not treat appointment availability, support hours or delivery hours as the universal main schedule.

  • Do not publish different visible and structured-data schedules.

  • Do not make repeated edits without recording which source caused the reversion.

Fix the source, not only the symptom

Correct Google hours begin with choosing the right type of schedule. Capture the public error, distinguish main hours from special or service hours, review Google updates, eliminate conflicting website data, and verify the exact profile customers find. That sequence prevents a temporary correction from reverting a few days later.

If your hours keep changing or several locations disagree, Webcurry can perform a focused local-search and website consistency review and document every source that needs correction.
